Blackhawks Show No Mercy Against Flames

The last time the Chicago Blackhawks and the Calgary Flames matched up this season, the Flames were winning 5-1 by the end of the first period. Luckily, the Blackhawks had an amazing rally and ended up defeating the Flames 6-5, in Over Time. Thursday night’s game against the Flames turned out a little differently, with the Blackhawks ahead by a goal at the end of the first period, and then leading 6-1 by the end of the second period. Kris Versteeg put in two goals, making him the first Blackhawk to have multiple goals in a game, this season.

In the past, the Blackhawks have had trouble getting goals during Power Plays, but this was not an issue during this game; four of the Hawks seven goals came off Power Plays.

About half way through the first period, Troy Brouwer put in a Power Play goal, amidst a battle of sticks in front of the net. However, only 14 seconds into the second period, Calgary tied the game up off a Power Play goal of their own; little did anyone know, that would be the last goal the Flames would score all night.

Less than two minutes later, Versteeg took advantage of the Power Play to give the Hawks the lead again. Dustin Byfuglien got his seventh goal of the season after assisting Patrick Sharp in stealing the puck away from Calgary. A few minutes later, Andrew Ladd had a beautiful goal, unchallenged by the Flames, who were still trying to get back from the other end of the ice; credit is definitely owed to Duncan Keith who saw Ladd down the ice, by himself, and sent the puck to him.

In the final two minutes of the second period, the Birthday Boy, Mr. Patrick Kane, put in his fourth consecutive game goal during another Power Play. With less than a minute, Versteeg had his second goal of the game off a beautiful pass from Kane. The third period proved to be no better for the Flames, and with less than five minutes left in the game, Ben Eager had his first goal of the season.

Calgary actually outshot Chicago in this game, but obviously could not make much of that. Cristobal Huet, who got pulled from the net during the last game with the Flames, made 27 saves. Huet is now third place for wins amongst NHL goalies, and has a 90.7% save percentage.

The Blackhawks will continue their circus trip on Saturday, November 21 when they battle Nikolai Khabibulin and the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers are now 9-10-3, falling on the lower end of the Northwest Division.

Blackhawks Pull Out Over Time Win Against Sharks

What an amazing game by the Chicago Blackhawks! The San Jose Sharks led 3-1 in the second period, but Chicago made a comeback and ended up winning in Over Time, thanks to a quick goal by Brent Seabrook. The Hawks lead the Central division with 26 points; three points more than the second place Detriot Red Wings. The Blackhawks will now finish out November with a six game road trip, with a possible appearance by Marian Hossa towards the end!

Only about four minutes into the game, Brent Sopel put a long shot in from the Blue Line, giving him his first goal of the season. The Blackhawks have now had 18 different people score in their 19 games. However, before the end of the first period, San Jose tied up the game.

The second period was extremely eventful, starting off with another goal from the Sharks, during a Power Play. 45 seconds later, the Sharks took a two goal lead. The Blackhawks put the pressure on and a couple of minutes later, Patrick Kane put in a pass from Jonathan Toews, who was behind the Sharks net. Now the game was only a one goal difference, and in the final minutes of the second period, John Madden tied the game up after putting in a rebound from Andrew Ladds shot.

14 shots were taken by both teams in the third period, but neither team was able to put anything more in. The game went into Over Time, but it was a fairly quick Over Time. It only took Brent Seabrook 41 seconds to score the game winning goal. Toews, playing with the puck in front of the net, gave a quick centered pass to Seabrook, who had skated in from the Hawks side.

Cristobal Huet had 20 saves against the Sharks. This is a pretty big accomplishment considering the Sharks are currently the leading team in the NHL and average a little more than three goals a game. Huet is now tied for fourth in wins.

The Blackhawks will start their Roadtrip against the Calgary Flames this Thursday, November 19 at 8:30 P.M. CT. The last time these two teams matched up this season, the Hawks rallied from a five goal defecit to win the game in Over Time.

Blackhawks Top of the Central Division

What do you get when you mix one of the teams that leads the NHL in shooting and another that has the goalie with the worst save percentage in the NHL? You get a Chicago Blackhawks victory! Corny, yes, but all the same, the Blackhawks win over the Toronto Maple Leafs Friday night has kept the team ahead in the Central Division.

Patrick Kane wasted no time, putting in the first goal only 3:22 into the game. Once again, Kane amazed the hockey world with another great shot; are we sure this kid is really only 20? About ten minutes later, Duncan Keith smashed the puck through a sea of players, putting the Hawks up by two goals. Chicago got a Power Play a couple of minutes into the second period. This allowed Troy Brouwer to deflect in Patrick Sharp’s shot, giving him his fifth goal of the season, and Sharps tenth assist.

Toronto managed to put their first goal in during the final minutes of the second period. Then, early in the third period, they put the pressure on a bit with another goal, making it a 3-2 game. Luckily, Cristobal Huet and the defense held the team off for the remaining time, giving Chicago another win.

Huet played a great game in goal, saving 29 shots. His save percentage is now at 90.5%, moving him one spot above the Stanley Cup Champs, Marc Andre Fleury.

The Chicago Blackhawks will face the San Jose Sharks Tomorrow, November 15 at 6:00 P.M. CT. This game will mark the final game of the Blackhawks four game Homestand. Starting Thursday, November 19, the Blackhawks will begin their six game Roadtrip.

Carlos Zambrano Honored with Third Silver Slugger Award

The Chicago Cubs may not have had the best season, but here is one good thing to come from it. For his second consecutive year, Carlos Zambrano has won the NL Silver Slugger award for the Pitching Position. Zambrano also won the award in 2006.

The award is presented to the best offensive player at each position in the AL and NL, determined by MLB coaches and managers. Chicago Breaking Sports points out that “Zambrano led major-league pitchers last season with four home runs and nine extra-base hits.” Not to mention, Zambrano is always a crowd favorite when he steps up to the plate.

He is one of only three Cubs players to receive the award at least three times. The other two are Ryne Sandberg, for second base, and Sammy Sosa, for Outfield. Zambrano has been the only pitcher to receive the award while pitching for the Cubs.
