The Chicago Blackhawks pulled out the Overtime win against the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night with the Sudden Death goal coming from Patrick Sharp. Sharp also had the first goal of the game, off an assist from his buddy, Adam Burish. This was Burish’s first game of the season, missing all the prior games due to surgery on his knee done in the off-season.

It only took Sharp two and a half minutes into the game to put Chicago up on the board. The Blackhawks held this one goal lead until nearly five minutes into the second period when the Kings tied the game up. Less than three minutes later, Los Angeles took the lead during a Power Play. Luckily, Kris Versteeg tied the game up at two a piece before the halfway point of the game. With no more goals from either team during the rest of Regulation Time, the game went into Overtime; Sharp sank the game winning goal during the second minute.

Antti Niemi started in the net against the Kings, only giving up two goals. Niemi had 27 saves in the game, and one of the goals he gave up was during a Power Play. Recently, there has been much criticism over the Hawks goal tending, and whether or not they will be able to bring us the Cup; however, Blackhawks fans will just have to wait in anticipation to know the answer to that question.

The Chicago Blackhawks will travel to Philadelphia for this Saturdays game against Flyers. The game will take place on March. 13 at Noon, CT.

Less than five minutes into the game, Duncan Keith put in his 13th goal of the season off an assist from his Defensive, Canadian partner, Brent Seabrook; Keith now trails Mike Green by two goals for Leading Defensive Goal Scorer. In the 11th minute, Ladd had his first goal, sending Chicago into the second period up by two goals.

Unfortunately, the Red Wings really came out strong in the second period; not only did they dominate the goal scoring for the period, but they took a three goal lead on the Hawks. Their first came during a Power Play in the fourth minute, followed by a tying goal less than a minute later. Nearly half way through the period, they took the lead for the first time, and then extended that lead less than a minute after that. At this point, Cristobal Huet was switched out with Antti Niemi, who would have gone scoreless, and possibly sent the game into Over Time, if not for his single goal allowed in the final three seconds of the period.

Chicago came out much better in the third period, with Ladd putting in his second goal during the opening two minutes. Then, with a little under eight minutes left in the game, Ladd got his Hat Trick and made it a one goal difference. Unfortunately, the Blackhawks just couldn’t put one more in before the game ended.

Before being pulled, Huet had 13 saves, with the majority of them coming from the first period, where he managed to go scoreless. Unfortunately, his save percentage for the second period was 50%. Niemi didn’t have to work too hard, only making seven saves during his time in the game; however, he had some big saves that really kept the Hawks in the game until the final horn blew.

The Blackhawks will get a few days of rest before taking on the Los Angeles Kings this Wednesday, March 10th, at 7:30 P.M. CT. The Blackhawks are currently 1-1 with the Kings, this season.

The Chicago Cubs fell victim to an onslaught of Home Runs from the Chicago White Sox in their first Spring Training Match Up of the season. The Cubs trailed the White Sox for the entire game, only grabbing three runs in the third inning. Luckily, Spring Training is the time to work out all these errors so that when the real Crosstown Classic begins, the Cubs can put up that Win!

The Cubs put up five Home Runs in their Spring Training Opener, but the two games since (Diamondbacks and White Sox) have been without homers. Kosuke Fukudome and Derrek Lee each had RBIs to bring in Ryan Theriot, Geovany Soto, and Bobby Scales. Unfortunately, this little spark in the third inning was all the Cubs saw in the game.

On the Mound:

Carlos Silva had a tough two innings, giving up seven hits, six runs, and two of the five Home Runs. Jeff Kennard didn’t do much better, two of the other homers, along with four hits and four runs. John Grabow gave up the final Home Run, along with two other runs during his single inning in the game. Mitch Atkins and Carlos Marmol were the only two Cubs pitchers to not give up any runs, or any hits for that matter. Each played an inning, with two Strike Outs for Marmol and one for Atkins.

Hopefully, the Cubs will have better luck against the White Sox Tomorrow, March 7. The grudge match will begin at 2:05 P.M. CT.

The Chicago Blackhawks and the Vancouver Canucks got into it right from the start of the game, delaying the game several times due to scruffs. Luckily, the Blackhawks emerged with a big lead after the first period, only giving up a single goal. Jordan Hendry got his first goal of the season, meaning every single player on the Active Roster, who isn’t injured or a goalie, has had a goal this season. Chicago continues to lead the Central Division with a huge 16 point game; they are also tied with the San Jose Sharks for most points in the Western Conference.

Andrew Ladd put in the first Hawks goal during the opening 3:48, assisted by Dustin Byfuglien. A little over half way through the period, Duncan Keith got his 12th goal of the season during a Power Play. Less than a minute later, Troy Brouwer gave Chicago a three goal lead over Vancouver. With under six minutes remaining in the first period, the Canucks closed the gap a little with their first goal, but Kris Versteeg widened it right back up about a minute later, making the score 4-1. With under a minute remaining in the first period, Hendry nabbed his first goal of the season, assisted by Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane.

The Canucks, who were trailing by four goals going into the second period, got their second goal during the opening two minutes. The only other period to score in the second period was Marian Hossa, grabbing his 19th goal of the season. The Blackhawks almost held the Canucks to only two goals, but with under three minutes remaining, Vancouver put in their third and final goal.

Cristobal Huet played a great game, making 20 saves and only giving up three goals, one of which was in the final minutes when the Hawks were already way up. A couple of big diving saves by Huet prevented any mishaps earlier on.

The Blackhawks have a big game this Sunday, March 7, against the Detroit Red Wings. Chicago is currently 3-1 in their match ups with Detroit. The game will be on at 11:30 A.M. CT.

The Chicago Blackhawks had a much better second game back from the Olympic break, defeating the Edmonton Oilers with three goals in the third period. Chicago put in the first goal, but after back to back goals from Edmonton, spirits were knocked down a bit. Luckily, the Blackhawks picked it up and grabbed their 42 win of the season. The Hawks are currently tied with the Capitals for first in the NHL, in regards to season wins in Regulation Time.

After a scoreless first period, Marian Hossa put in the opening goal during the third minute of the second period, off a great pass from Dave Bolland. With under five minutes left in the period, Edmonton somehow got a silly goal past Cristobal Huet, tying the game. Less than a minute later, they put another one in, taking the lead for the first time in the game. Morale seemed to really drop after that, until Bolland put in another tying goal in the final two minutes of the period.

Only 20 seconds into the third period, Niklas Hjalmarsson netted his second goal of the season, putting the Hawks back on top. Nine minutes later, Dustin Byfuglien made it a two goal lead with a Power Play goal. Jonathan Toews had the final, clinching goal in the 16th minute, with assists from Patrick Sharp and Duncan Keith.

Huet only gave up two goals in this game, but both occurred within a minute of each other. This was Huet’s first start in about a month, and despite the goals, he did a great job. He had 12 saves against the Oilers.

The Chicago Blackhawks will take on the Vancouver Canucks this Friday, March 5, at 7:30 P.M. CT.
