The Chicago Blackhawks had a much better second game back from the Olympic break, defeating the Edmonton Oilers with three goals in the third period. Chicago put in the first goal, but after back to back goals from Edmonton, spirits were knocked down a bit. Luckily, the Blackhawks picked it up and grabbed their 42 win of the season. The Hawks are currently tied with the Capitals for first in the NHL, in regards to season wins in Regulation Time.
After a scoreless first period, Marian Hossa put in the opening goal during the third minute of the second period, off a great pass from Dave Bolland. With under five minutes left in the period, Edmonton somehow got a silly goal past Cristobal Huet, tying the game. Less than a minute later, they put another one in, taking the lead for the first time in the game. Morale seemed to really drop after that, until Bolland put in another tying goal in the final two minutes of the period.
Only 20 seconds into the third period, Niklas Hjalmarsson netted his second goal of the season, putting the Hawks back on top. Nine minutes later, Dustin Byfuglien made it a two goal lead with a Power Play goal. Jonathan Toews had the final, clinching goal in the 16th minute, with assists from Patrick Sharp and Duncan Keith.
Huet only gave up two goals in this game, but both occurred within a minute of each other. This was Huet’s first start in about a month, and despite the goals, he did a great job. He had 12 saves against the Oilers.
The Chicago Blackhawks will take on the Vancouver Canucks this Friday, March 5, at 7:30 P.M. CT.
