The Chicago Blackhawks were only three seconds away from sending this game into Overtime…unfortunately, the Philadelphia Flyers put in a game winning goal moments before Regulation Time ended. Both teams went into the third period, scoreless, but that quickly changed once the whistle for the final period was blown. Luckily, the Hawks took a big enough lead in the standings during the first half of the season, and still maintain a big lead in the Central Division.
A little over a minute into the third period, the Flyers put in the first goal of the game; however, Kris Versteeg answered right back about two minutes later, during a Power Play. With a little over seven minutes remaining in Regulation Time, Marian Hossa got his 20th goal of the season, putting Chicago ahead. Hossa has reached the halfway point of his goal scoring record last season…which isn’t too bad, considering he missed almost half of this season recovering for his shoulder surgery.
In the final three minutes of the game, the Hawks broke down. At 17:56, the Flyers put in the tying goal, and just when it looked like this game was going to be decided in Overtime, the Flyers put in a game winning goal at 19:57.
Cristobal Huet was, literally, seconds away sending the game into Overtime, but it’s not all his fault. During those final seconds, he faced a 4-2, and the Flyers got the best of the situation. Huet made 31 great saves during the game, holding Philadelphia scoreless for the first two periods.
The Chicago Blackhawks play a big game Today, March 14, against the Washington Capitals. This is the only Regular Season match up between these two teams, and the Capitals currently lead the Eastern Conference. The puck will drop at 11:30 A.M. CT.
