Not only did the Chicago Blackhawks snap the Phoenix Coyotes’ nine game winning streak, but they did it with a Shut Out. The Coyotes, who beat the Blackhawks in a Shoot Out in the previous game, couldn’t manage to put one of their 28 shots in the net on Tuesday night. Phoenix has recently emerged as one of the hottest teams in the Western Conference, gunning for that Conference Leader position. Despite their efforts, the Blackhawks currently still hold the title, leading the San Jose Sharks by a point, but still with a game in hand.
20 shots were exchanged in the first period, but both teams entered the second period tied at zero. Less than two minutes into the second period, Patrick Kane put in the opening goal off an assist from Troy Brouwer; this was Kane’s 28th goal of the season, extending his career high. Less than six minutes later, Marian Hossa made it 2-0 with his 22nd goal of the season. Phoenix played hard in the third period, taking 11 shots, but luckily, none of them went in.
Antti Niemi was on fire in the goal! 28 saves earned Niemi his 6th Shut Out of the season, and a big win for the Blackhawks. He had some really amazing saves at very crucial points in the game, keeping Chicago’s spirits up and maintaining the lead in the Western Conference.
The Blackhawks can hopefully carry this momentum into their final ten games of the Regular Season. Their next game is against the Columbus Blue Jackets this Thursday, March 25, at 6:00 P.M. CT.
