Blackhawks Go All the Way to a Shoot Out with the Coyotes

The Chicago Blackhawks came close to delivering the Phoenix Coyotes their first loss in the last eight games, but two third period goals sent this game into Extra Time. The game’s decision ended up coming down to a Shoot Out, where the Hawks were unable to pull out the win. Luckily, Chicago still managed to grab a point, maintaining their position as leader of the Western Conference.

Troy Brouwer had the first, and only goal of the first period, taking a great pass from Patrick Kane. Five minutes into the second period, the Blackhawks made it a two goal lead during a Power Play; Kane had the goal, making it his 27th of the season. About four minutes later, Phoenix put in their first goal in, ending the second period, 2-1.

Then, about a minute into the third period, Phoenix tied the game up with a Power Play goal of their own. Shortly after, Andrew Ladd took a long shot, making a 16th season goal for number 16. A little over a minute after that, Patrick Sharp made it a two goal lead again, but the Coyotes closed the gap a little a few minutes later. With a little over five minutes left in the game, the Hawks were about to put this one away in Regular Time; unfortunately, the Coyotes managed to tie it up one last time.

Seven shots were exchanged in Overtime, with the majority of those against the Hawks. At one point, the Coyotes managed to put one in, but it was recalled due to being Kicked In, sending the game into a Shoot Out. Three missed shots by the Hawks and one good shot by the Coyotes ended this game in a Phoenix victory.

Despite letting four goals by in Regular Time, Antti Niemi really had a great game; he had a total of 31 saves against the Coyotes. This was only Niemi’s third Extra Time loss of the season.

The Blackhawks will get a chance at revenge this Tuesday, March 23, when they take on the Coyotes again. The puck will drop at 7:30 P.M. CT.
