Ryan Theriot Loses Arbitration, but Not Bitter

Written by: EricC on 21st February 2010

Of course, Ryan Theriot wishes he had won the arbitration case, and probably still feels he is worth the $3.4 million he was fighting for.  However, his arbitration hearing determined that the Chicago Cubs would only have to pay him $2.6 million in 2010.   Teams typically try to avoid the process of arbitration, simply because it has the potential to be a lose-lose situation.  Either, the team will lose the hearing and have to pay more than they felt the player was worth, or they’ll win (like in this case) and there can be bad blood between the two parties.

Luckily, for the Chicago Cubs organization, and for Cubs fans, Theriot does not seem to be too bitter about the outcome.  According to Chicago Breaking Sports News, he is still receiving a “$2.1 million raise from his 2009 salary of $500,000, and will be the starting shortstop and probable lead-off hitter.”   Theriot has talked about his lasting respect for the Cubs GM, Jim Hendry, and that the result of the arbitration wasn’t enough to ruin that.

Hopefully, Ryan Theriot can put up big numbers in the 2010 season.
