Chicago Blackhawks Get Thrashers in Shoot Out

The Chicago Blackhawks and Atlanta Thrashers definitely made their only match up of the Regular Season an action packed one. After each team put up four goals during Regulation Time, and nobody put anything in during Overtime, the game came down to a Shoot Out. Jonathan Toews emerged as the only contender able to put a goal in, giving the Blackhawks their 40th win. Newly acquired Defenseman Kim Johnsson even had a goal in his debut for Chicago.

Atlanta started out the scoring in this game, taking an early lead during the third minute of play. Less than four minutes later, Patrick Sharp tied it up on a Power Play opportunity, getting the assist from Patrick Kane. A little over two minutes after that, Johnsson put in his first Hawks goal, giving Chicago the lead and Kane another assist. Then, during the 13th minute of the first period, Marian Hossa grabbed his fifth Short Handed goal of the season, taking the lead in the NHL for Short Handed goal.

Trailing by two goals, the Thrashers really stepped it up in the second period. Not only did they tie it up, but they took the lead off a Power Play goal in the final minutes of the period. Luckily, early in the third period, Dave Bolland, who missed a good portion of the season due to injury. put in his third goal of the season. Bolland’s goal tied the game up, sending it into Overtime. After a scoreless Overtime, the game went into a short Shoot Out where Toews won the game for Chicago.

Antti Niemi got his third consecutive start for the Blackhawks; this was the first time for him since joining the Chicago roster. Niemi didn’t have a great game, only making 23 saves and giving up four goals; however, he made the saves that counted, especially in the Shoot Out. His record for the season is now 16-4-1.
