While losses like this can be disheartening, let us not forget; the Chicago Blackhawks are still one of the best teams in the NHL.  Only the San Jose Sharks have more points then them, leading by two, but they have also played one more game than Chicago.  The Blackhawks had the opportunity to beat the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night, or to at least send the game into Over Time.  Unfortunately, a couple of missed opportunities caused their first loss on the Road Trip.

Nearly seven minutes into the game, Ottawa grabbed their first goal off a defensive error.  During the twelfth minute, they made it a two goal lead over the Hawks.  Chicago had seven shots in that first period, but just couldn’t get any of them in, despite having some close calls.

Six minutes into the second period, Marian Hossa made it a one goal difference with his Short Handed goal.  It was his 13th goal of the season and third Short Handed goal of the season; he now tied for the NHL’s leader in Short Handed goals, and has helped the Hawks to do the same.  Hossa almost had a second goal, but the Senator’s goalie made a big diving save and just got his stick in the way of the open net.  With under two minutes left in the second period, Ottawa widened the gap again.  The Blackhawks fought hard until the end, but a Power Play goal in the final minutes of the game pretty much crushed any lingering hopes of a victory.

Cristobal Huet only had 14 saves against the Senators, giving up four goals.  Hopefully, he can put this game behind him and step it up for the remainder of the Road Trip.

The Blackhawks next game will be against the Calgary Flames this Thursday, January 21, at 8:30 P.M. CT.  This game will mark the half way point of the eight game Road Trip.
