What an intense game!  The Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings both went at it hard Sunday afternoon, each determined to grab a win.  Patrick Sharp ended up getting the win for the Blackhawks in the fourth round of a Shoot Out.  Chicago has now chalked up two wins during their first two games of their eight game Road Trip.  Chicago, once again, leads the NHL in total points.

Less than eight minutes into the game, Troy Brouwer gloved Cam Barker’s pass, took it to the net, and put it right between the goalie’s legs.  With a little over five minutes left in the period, Patrick Kane made it a two goal lead for Chicago with his Power Play goal.  However, before the opening period could come to an end, Detroit put one up on the board.

During the eighth minute of the second period, the Red Wings put in a Power Play goal of their own, tying the game at two a piece.  Less than three minutes later, Sharp gave Chicago the lead again.  The Blackhawks held that lead until about half way through the final period.  Detroit refused to lose to Chicago in regular time, for the third time this season, tying the game with about ten minutes left.

The Red Wings definitely looked like the strong team during the Over Time, out shooting the Hawks, 4-2.  Luckily, Chicago managed to make it out of Over Time and take down Detroit in the Shoot Out.  Each team put in two of their opening three goals, but Sharp had the goal that made the difference.

Antti Niemi was in goal for this game, and what a great job he did.  Although he wasn’t able to grab a Shut Out against them like the last time he faced them, he had some amazing saves that really made the difference in the game’s outcome.  With 35 saves, Niemi got his 12th win of the season.  His Save Percentage is now 92.1%.

The Blackhawks will continue their Road Trip on Tuesday, January 19, at 6:30 P.M. CT.  They will be facing off against the Ottawa Senators, who are currently third in their division.
