The Chicago Blackhawks were not short for shots on Saturday night, as they took on the Carolina Hurricanes for their only regular season match up. The Hawks took a total of 41 shots on the Hurricanes, and had many close attempts, but they just couldn’t put more than two goals in the net. However, their Road Trip is finally over and the Blackhawks will be returning to Chicago for the first time in nearly three weeks.
In the final ten seconds of the first period, Carolina took the lead with the opening goal. However, less than seven minutes into the second period, Marian Hossa snagged his 15th goal of the season; he is now only 25 goals away from tying his record last season. Unfortunately, before the period could come to an end, the Hurricanes took the lead again.
This time, less than eight minutes into the third period, Andrew Ladd tied the game with an assist from Hossa. The Hawks and Hurricanes were tied at two a piece, and with all the shots Chicago was taking, they were bound to take the lead. Carolina managed to pull ahead again, followed by a two goal lead, less than 30 seconds later. There was still ten minutes left in the game, but the Hawks just couldn’t put another goal in.
Although the numbers don’t really show it, Cristobal Huet was tough out in the net against the Hurricanes. A couple careless errors on the part of him and the Hawks defense allowed the four goals for the Hurricane victory. However, this is a team that has been on the road for over two weeks now, and had two days to travel across the country for this game.
The Blackhawks will return to Chicago on Wednesday, February 3, to take on the St. Louis Blues. The game will begin at 7:30 P.M. CT.
