The Chicago Blackhawks came out sporting their new Alternate Jerseys on Tuesday night, taking on the Columbus Blue Jackets for the first time this season. For the second consecutive game, the Blackhawks ended their match in a Shoot Out; luckily, this outcome was much better than the last. After 11 rounds, Brent Seabrook finally put a goal in for Chicago, ending the game and giving Joel Quenneville his 500th win. The Blackhawks now have a 6 point lead in the Central Division.
Nearly 14 minutes into the game, Kris Versteeg faked the shot twice, getting past two Blue Jacket defenders, and finally putting it in, during a Blue Jacket Power Play. This was the Hawks fourth Short Handed goal in the last four games. Columbus out shot the Blackhawks in the first period, 2:1, but didn’t put anything past Cristobal Huet.
In the eighth minute of the second period, Columbus tied it up with their first goal of the game. A few minutes later, the took the lead with a fairly unchallenged goal. Before the end of the period, the Hawks had an opportunity with a Power Play. Patrick Kane put a great pass in front of the goal, bouncing backwards off of Marian Hossa’s stick, allowing Patrick Sharp to tie the game up again.
In the third period, Columbus wasted no time taking the lead again, smashing a slap shot past Huet. However, the Hawks weren’t ready to lose their third consecutive game, delaying Quenneville’s 500th win any longer. During another Power Play, Jonathan Toews deflected in a long shot from Duncan Keith, tying the score at three.
It was an eventful Over Time with an exchanged seven shots, but nothing went in. During the Shoot Out, it was a battle of the goalies. By round 11, Hossa and one of the Blue Jackets were the only players to put something in. Finally, Seabrook stepped it up and scored the winning goal, adding a Shoot Out win to his two Over Time wins.
Huet may have faltered on the second goal that got past him, but other than that he was pretty solid. Huet had 20 saves during the game, along with ten extremely crucial saves during the Shoot Out.
The Blackhawks have off a few days before taking on the Nashville Predators this Friday, December 4, at 7:30 P.M. CT. The Predators are currently tied for second in the Central Division with the Blue Jackets.
