After the first period, it looked like it was going to be a low scoring game between the Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins, with only one goal on the board. With both teams leading their division, they seemed pretty evenly matched; however, this would prove to be far from the truth. The game went into Over Time, tied 4-4, eventually leading to a Shoot Out where Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane would be the only players able to score, leading to Chicago’s third consecutive win!
During the ninth minute of the game, Boston got their first goal, ending the Blackhawk’s two game Shut Out streak. Less than two minutes into the second period, Kris Versteeg had an unassisted goal, tying the game. Several minutes later, Patrick Sharp gave the Hawks the lead with his tenth goal of the season, being assisted by Brent Seabrook. During the 16th minute of the period, the Bruins tied the score again, but the score didn’t stay tied for very long. With under 30 seconds left in the period, Toews grabbed the lead back for Chicago, with his goal assisted by Troy Brouwer and Kane.
After a slow first period and a very eventful second period, there was no telling what the third period had in store. It began with the Bruins getting their third goal past Antti Niemi, to tie the game at three. Less than two minutes later, Andrew Ladd had a tip-in with the assist from Brian Campbell. It looked like the Blackhawks were going to take this game in regulation time, but with under three minuets left to play, Boston put in, yet another, tying goal.
Each team took three shots in Over Time, but neither was able to put anything in, sending the decision to Shoot Outs. With two unsuccessful shots for Boston and two goals from Chicago, the Hawks pulled out another win. Kane and Toews had the winning Shoot Out goals for the team.
Niemi was between the poles for Friday night’s game, doing a great job, like he has all season. Coming off a Shut Out from his last game, he went up against one of the best teams in the NHL. Boston managed to score four goals on him; the most any team has this season. However, 25 saves led the team to another victory, and brought his record up to 7-1-1.
The Blackhawks get a night off before facing their NHL rivals, the Detroit Red Wings, on Sunday night. The Red Wings, who faced the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Stanley Cup last season, are not having as great a year. The puck will drop at 6:00 P.M. CT.
