Cubs Say Goodbye to Another Season

Written by: EricC on 30th September 2009

It was definitely a season of many ups-and-downs.  The Cubs spent the first half of the season looking fairly decent, but giving up a lot of crucial road games.  Then, around the end of July, they took first place in the division, passing it back and forth with the St. Louis Cardinals for a while.  However, right after the trade deadline, the Cardinals began taking a commanding lead in the division and the Cubs new playoff hopes fell on the Wild Card.  Despite a strong ending, winning 14 of their last 21 games (as of Sept. 29), it just was not enough to catch up in the Wild Card race.

After seeing the Cubs win the division the past two years, it is disappointing to know that the team only has about a week left in this season.  Then about six more months until we get to see the Cubbies take another crack at that World Series.

Thankfully, Cubs fans are not the type to give up hope!  The Cubs will be returning with a new owner and a new spirit.  Come next Spring, Cubs fans will once again be uttering the phrase, “This will be the year.”  As cliche as that phrase may be, one day, it is going to a testament of a winning season.

It was only a matter of 10 games. Somehow, the Cubs need to find a way to win 10 more games – how hard could that be?

With just small incremental improvements in performance from Soto, Soriano, and whoever is going to play second base, that shouldn’t be too difficult.
