Cubs Mathematically Still in Playoff Race After Defeating Giants

Written by: EricC on 25th September 2009

The Chicago Cubs are 9 1/2 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals, 6 1/2 games behind the Wild Card, and only have 10 games left in their season, but they aren’t out of the playoff race yet.

Jeff Baker’s Ninth Inning, two-run Homer won the game for the Chicago Cubs last night. The Cubs trailed the San Francisco Giants 2-1 going into the Ninth Inning, and it didn’t look good for the Cubs. They were 1 out away from losing the game when Baker hit a home run and made it a 3-2 game. Carlos Marmol came out to pitch the bottom of the ninth, striking out three batters, and helping the Cubs maintain their fight for the playoffs.

Ryan Dempster had a stellar game, only giving up two runs and seven hits during his seven innings. He struck out six batters.

The Cubs face the Giants in game two, tonight at 9:15 CT.
