Are the Cubs Truly Done?

Written by: EricC on 15th September 2009

As hopeful at they are, the majority of Chicago Cubs fans have given up on the Cubs this season…but have the Cubs given up on themselves?

Sure, it’s a long shot, but the Cubs do still have a very, very slight chance of catching the Wild Card.  The Cubs are currently 6 games over .500 and trailing the Florida Marlins, Atlanta Braves, Colorado Rockies, and the San Francisco Giants.  These four teams are 8, 7, 19, and 12 games over .500, respectively.  Thus, the Rockies and Giants are the Cub’s main opponents for this Wild Card race.

The Cubs have Won Six of their last Seven Games.  Granted, three of those games were against the Pittsburgh Pirates, but they’re still Wins.  The rest of their season looks like this:

-6 games with the Milwaukee Brewers (Record: 7-4)

-4 games with the Pittsburgh Pirates (Record: 9-2)

-4 games with the San Francisco Giants (Record: 1-1)

-3 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks (Record: 1-2)

-3 games with the St. Louis Cardinals (Record: 4-6)

I’m not saying it looks good for the Cubs, but with 20 games left and the Cubs stepping up their game a little in the final weeks, it may not exactly be time for Cubs fans to throw in the towel.  Most of these fans have spent their entire lives supporting a team that has never won a World Series in their Lifetimes; why not stick it out for a few more games?

Regardless if you continue to support or mark it off as a loss…There’s always next year.
