The Chicago Blackhawks lost to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday in a 4-3 shootout. Sure, we all like to see wins, but wins for the Blackhawks at this point in the season won't effect their standings in the Western Conference. Due to division winners getting the top three spots of a conference, Chicago cannot go any higher than the 4th spot, and the Calgary Flames (who are in the spot below them) do not have enough games left in the season to overtake the position. So the question is, who would be better for the Blackhawks to play in the first round of the playoffs?
As for Wednesday nights game, the Blue Jackets had a chance at a goal, from a penalty shot, about half way through the first period, but did not make it. Brent Seabrook put the first goal in for Chicago, followed by David Bolland in the final seconds of the period. Then in the second period, the Blue Jackets tied the score back up at 2-2. Chicago's Martin Havlat put another one in the back of the net before the end of the second period. It looked like it was going to be the Blackhawks win until Columbus tied it back up once again in the third period. The game went into Over Time, but no goals were made. Columbus won during the shootout, 4-3.
Nikolai Khabibulin guarded the net with 19 saves, not including the shoot out. Chicago's defense really held it strong during Over Time, because the Blue Jackets never even had a shot attempt.
The Chicago Blackhawks will play their second to last game this Saturday, April 11 at 2:00 Central Time against the Detroit Red Wings. Their final match will also be against the Red Wings the following day. The Redwings are currently placed 2nd in the Western Conference. Luckily, Chicago cannot drop from the 4th spot.
