The Chicago Blackhawks lost 5-1 to the Colorado Avalanche in Sunday's match-up. It was a tough loss considering the Avalanche is positioned last in the Western Conference. The game started off to a bad start for Chicago, going 2-0 into the second period. During the second period, Chicago managed to close the gap a little, thanks to a goal from Johnathan Toews, who currently leads the Blackhawks in goals scored. However, it didn't do much good since the Avalanche put two more in during that same period, and then added one more during the final period.
It was a tough day for Blackhawk's goalie Antti Niemi, who was only making his second start in the goal for the team. He managed to make 24 saves, but let those other 5 get past him.
Although some of the blame can be put on Niemi for not making those saves, it's not entirely his. Chicago's defense needs to step it up a little more, and the offense will need to put in more than a single goal during a game if they want to keep that 4th conference spot. The Blackhawks have lost their last two games.
The Chicago Blackhawks will play their next game against the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday, March 11 at 7:30 P.M. Central Time.
