Blackhawks Come Close, But Edmonton Oilers Win in Shoot Out

Written by: EricC on 21st March 2009

It's so frusterating to see your team play this close game, nearly win with a third period penalty shot, and then have to mark a loss down after a shoot out.  However, Chicago Blackhawk's fans had to endure this anxiety in yesterday's match up between the Blackhawks and the Edmonton Oilers.

It was a complete "back-and-forth" game, with goals alternating between each team.  The first period saw two goals from Edmonton and two from Chicago; Chicago's goals came from Dave Bolland and Adam Burish.  The goals continued to alternate in the second period, but ended with the Oilers up a point at 4-3.  The Blackhawks second period goal came from defenseman Cam Barker.  Then, in the seventh minute of the final period, Martin Havlat added the tying goal for Chicago.  Jonathan Toews was awarded a penalty shot in the third period of the game, which would have been a game winning goal for Chicago, but he was unable to put it in the back of the net; the game went into over time.

After a scoreless over time, the game moved into a shootout between the teams.  Unfortunately, Nikolai Khabibulin could not save the Oiler's game winning goal.  Khabibulin made 27 saves between the regulation time and the over time.

The Blackhawks have now moved into the 5th position in the Western Conference, but they are tied for 4th with the Vancouver Canucks.  Chicago will play it's next game Sunday, March 22 at 2:00 Central Time against the Los Angeles Kings.
